A summer camp should enable the kids to learn in a fun environment, about living in harmony with nature, self sustainability, managing on their own in the wilderness. Kids engage and learn when there is an element of fun involved. Ms. Nivedita, the Director of Frolic Boonies , a nature camp for children feels that, all camps should ensure that there is an element of fun, creativity and learning involved in each activity. She shared her thoughts about the benefits of Summer Camps in general and what’s special about Frolic Boonies in this interview.

Frolic Boonies was started in 2007. We deal with different age groups for different camping locations. We specialise in residential camps focused on wildlife, adventure and fun. To name a few are Kenya safari camps, Tribal art and Handicrafts camp, Young Entrepreneurs camp etc. All our locations are chosen with care to ensure that the children enjoy and explore wildlife in safe environment. Our USP is camping and wildlife exploration.

She feels that in these camps children has a scope to learn to be independent and make new friends along with learning about nature, wilderness survival, recycling and adopt environmental friendly lifestyle.
Escalating flight tickets costs especially with our Andaman and Africa camps is a challenge she points out .High cost incurred for advertisements and year round office maintenance for seasonal business is difficult so, we have brought in online registrations.

Ensuring safety, clean and hygienic conditions to the children is our utmost priority says Nivedita. We always have first aid available at our camp site and doctor on call. We prepare hygienic nutritious food and keep our tents and rooms cleaned every day. The naturalists who work with us/children are trained in their field and are adept at handling any unforeseen emergencies. The campus is surrounded by trench dug by the forest department and our solar fence.
Mentioning the ability of Frolic Boonies instructors she says, since the ratio of staff to children is 1:6 it’s not a big task for our experienced staff to handle the varied temperaments of some children.

Remembering the precious memories of the previous years with the children in various camps, she mentions, children often ask us to arrange a reunion party after the camp as they feel they get connected emotionally with the fellow campers and the staff. I proudly mention that so many children who took part in our camps became volunteers for us.
An advice from her to someone launching a program to improve environmental awareness and health in schools would be – First the children must be brought close to nature and they must develop a love towards nature only then they may get into conserving the nature.
