Purpose of Education
The purpose of education is to develop lifelong learners, thinkers and responsible global citizens who are confidently equipped to face the challenges of an uncertain future.
There is no scope of denial that technological skills along with communication and team work will be the most important 21st century skill sets that our children need to master in the current work-life scenario. We should not forget that competition is a by product of globalization and that children are not born competitive. They learn it eventually.
Present education system should lay more stress on coordination, cooperation and collaboration rather than competition. The objective of a truly purposeful education system is not to enable one to score higher marks and grades and thus open doors to a great job but rather to nurture a future-ready confident global citizen capable of generating diverse job options for the society.
The changing role of a teacher
21st century educators are not mere teachers, rather they act as facilitators who are not hesitant to continually experiment with innovative teaching-learning methodologies and most importantly they are not reluctant to fail. Through constant re-evaluation of teaching methods, the conventional lecture method has given way to increased use of information technology in the classroom.
To help students learn better, the teacher facilitates student presentations and discussions in class. Multi-disciplinary approach exhibited through flip teaching using videos created by the teachers on important concepts has helped to make a significant impact on student progress and achievement. This blended learning approach pushes the boundaries of traditional teaching methods.
Use of technology as a teaching tool
It is not possible to ignore technology which has now become an integral part of a student’s life. We are educating the natives of the technology age and it is therefore necessary to teach them in the language and tools they understand the best.
However, technology can never replace the teacher. But it can definitely be used to enhance students’ engagement as well as learning. Technological literacy being at the centre of 21st century learning, schools should be equipped to prepare global citizens who are technologically sound.
Selection of Teachers
While recruiting the teachers, I look primarily for passion, will and learn-ability. The right attitude and energy should be identified before skill evaluation. The mental agility and flexibility to unlearn and re-learn and the ability to embrace new challenges are some of the qualities that I look for in a new hire.
