Seema Sapru – The Heritage School, Kolkata
The Heritage School, established in 2001, is an international day-boarding school based in Kolkata. It is a unique endeavour of the Kalyan Bharti Trust to recreate the ancient Gurukul tradition of India. The school offers a variety of curricula ranging from the national ICSE and ISC to the international IGCSE and IBDP. Seema Sapru is the current Principal.
Ms. Sapru says, The Heritage School was a fledgling school when I took over as the Principal 11 years ago. It is today one of the best schools in the country. From Wi-Fi enabled teaching to pottery making, learning the art of appropriate body language through mime to weaving in the looms, we do it all. Not a dull moment here. This is The Heritage School for you! From balancing the rifle on the shoulder to hitting the target in the archery area, we’ve mastered the art of juggling elephants!
The Heritage School is a day boarding school where we say “Namaste” to each other respecting the soul within all of us. We are a technologically advanced school and yet rooted in our tradition. We follow our own assessment system till class 8. Ours is a learner centric’ school where everyone learns. Teachers themselves are learners and facilitate learning. The Heritage school is an inclusive school where students of all abilities are given the opportunity to participate in varied activities. The school, provides an ideal atmosphere and opportunities for learners to acquire and imbibe skills necessary for their physical, mental, social and intellectual development.”
Technology in the School
The classrooms at the Heritage are equipped with modern technological teaching aids like computers, projectors and smart boards. Use of cutting edge technology helps to make the class more interactive and the lessons more interesting. Staff rooms have one to one computer / laptops for all teachers. We also have school management software and online learning solution for conceptual learning. We are almost a paper- less school.
Most of our teachers are CISCE and IBDP examiners. We believe that each teacher is a counsellor and therefore counsellor’s training is also given to all teachers.
The school ethos are deeply embedded in the thinking of all teachers. A seven day orientation programme is conducted just before the start of every academic year. Topics based on classroom management and subject specific topics are included.
Improving Communication Skills
Our students are involved in several activities which help them to create effective communication and public speaking skills. Besides the regular dramatization, Eurhythmics, creative writing, listening comprehension and oral comprehension in the classrooms, the students also take part in:
·Inter House Debate Competitions.
·THS Inter School MUN (Model United
·Sanglaap which means conversation is an interschool literary fest for the middle school students.
·Confero- Interschool debate competition for grades IX and X.
· Entrebiz and Negotio – These are business fests where children learn to negotiate and learn entrepreneurship skills.
Ms. Sapru concludes, “They say that there exists a thin dividing line that separates a good school from a truly great school. I am happy to say that in our fifteenth year, we are moving steadily along the journey to greatness, and it is a pleasure to be accompanied on this journey by so many wonderful people.”
