Dr. Sunita Swaraj – The Heritage School, New Delhi
The Heritage School, Vasant Kunj, headed by Dr. Sunita Swaraj as its Principal, has carved a niche for itself
for its academic reputation and infrastructure apart from its concentration on students who need special care and those who are from economically weaker sections of society.
Co-curricular activities, sports education, conflict resolution, leadership and management and parent involvement are some features that have earned the school its excellent reputation.
The Body and Soul of the School
Dr. Sunita says, “School what I understand is made up of two main elements. First element is the body which includes building, infrastructural facilities.
Second element is the soul, all the members of the School – Children, Teachers, Support Staff, Parents and the Management. My entire efforts as a Principal is to make sure of a healthy body and beautiful soul.
Walking on the path, we have just come up with a new Table Tennis Room, International size Basketball Court and a much needed Football Turf.
The classrooms have been transformed into a smart class and are crew based with new child learning friendly furniture.
Our Vision is to make sure that all associated with the Heritage Group become the Change Makers. From support staff to the teachers and the students, all deserve a better life, both personally and professionally.
I try to make some good difference in every body’s life by giving them most precious thing that I have, “Time”. Personal satisfaction and continuous professional growth has reduced attrition rate in the School. Trained group teachers are able to take care of learners at all levels, which is my real strength.”
Relationship with Teachers & Students
“I try to only play the role of a mentor, equipping all my teachers with ability to think in the right direction; supporting them to take right decisions by themselves and enjoy their path of teaching and learning.
“Trust”, is the biggest factor in my working. I “Trust”, give “Freedom”, allow them not to think out of the box but to think beyond, as if there is no box at all”, says Dr. Sunita.
I try to assess the learning by observing children during breaks, assemblies etc., the way our children carry themselves, from me being at the gate to welcome them and making sure that they reach School on time. Just having lunch with the children and teachers in the dining area, gives me a lot of insight of learning going on in School.
Technology in the Classroom
“I would like to emphasize on developing the need of using the right IT tools, by both teachers and students and then supporting them with the requisite tools. As we know the market today is flooded with IT tools, all cannot and need not be incorporated.
Also, the Screen time of our learners have gone out of limits with their unlimited exposure to mobiles, laptops, i-pads etc. Our pedagogical practices believe in giving them balanced exposure of Screen Time and Physical Activity.
Thus, research time in each Subject, making presentations, writing Essays in MS Word, using Excel are very basic software that are children exposed to as per the need in each Subject in Middle and Senior School.”
The Social Responsibility
The Heritage school regularly undertakes various initiatives its responsibility to society and to nature.
* National Service Scheme club started to create change makers, to make lasting changes such as last year when they helped “the underprivileged of Vasant Kunj”
* Initiative at SDMC school in Hauz Khas to bring in underprivileged children to the school from slum regions
* Adopted a park nearby to conserve the green spaces and to make the society realize the need for green zones
* Cleanliness drives in school and nearby areas to promote Swachh Bharat Campaign, No to Polythene campaign conducted
* Project Patang aiming at promoting literacy among parents and students of EWS category
Dr. Sunita Swaraj says that the school works on discovering the innate talent of students by offering opportunities. “Our educators activate the magnets of curiosity by designing and executing modules carefully designed. To ignite young minds, unleash latent talent and innate interest, various clubs form an integral part of the school curriculum.”
Excursions and field trips to historical sites of significance, adventure trips, camping offer valuable learning experiences, innovation and creativity.
Dr. Sunita shares, “Getting down deeply into practices of each Grade, understanding the struggles of the mentors, providing them apt infrastructural and pedagogical support, meeting experts, arranging training sessions, building confidence in all, mentoring to follow their passion are certain areas where I love to work!!”
