Manan Khurma – Cuemath
The Founder & CEO, Cuemath, Manan Khurma’s whole life has been about Mathematics. As a young kid he wondered why kids find math boring or difficult and over the time he concluded that the problem is with the way kids are taught math.
An alumnus of IIT Delhi, Mr. Manan Khurma’s first venture was Locus Education where he taught math to school students preparing for the JEE entrance exam. While playing different roles as a writer, teacher and a content developer he realized first-hand that building a strong math foundation from a young age is very important, given how fundamental a skill of being great at math potentially is.
The process of building Cuemath– He started Cuemath in 2013, with the belief that great math learning can have a transformative impact on a child’s life. Towards the end of 2013, the team built the first prototype of the learning system; which involved building worksheets, tab-based learning activities, puzzle cards, and related stuff. They would build a learning module, give it to the students, calibrate it and then repeat the process.
He believes that it enabled them to figure out the most optimum learning content for each area of math. Once the prototype had been built, they recruited a few women in the Delhi / NCR region to run a pilot. These ladies started running home-based Cuemath centres, and within a few weeks, they had spectacular feedback from both students as well as teachers. “Their strong focus on building a world-class product led to more and more women joining as teachers and more and more parents looking to Cuemath as the after-school math learning avenue-of-choice for their children.”
He feels, Cuemath is a culmination of his life’s passion for math and math learning. He points out, in just three years, the team has been able to create a math revolution that is sweeping across the country.
About his extra efficient team- “Cuemath has been designed by math, education and technology experts from IIT, IIM, Stanford, Harvard, Cambridge and other top institutions. We have a team of around 200 full-time employees. Till date, we have 20 subject matter experts in curriculum and another 20 in product, engineering and design.
We are headquartered in Bengaluru. We have ground presence in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.”
When asked, How has Cuemath evolved during the years he says, “We are very agnostic in our approach. Our subject matter experts take constant inputs from the education systems of Finland, Singapore and other countries that are leaders in education. Based on our existing students’ (10,000 till date) data we try to calibrate our learning system to make it more powerful, personalised and engaging.
Technology is an integral part of our model. If the future of technology is Virtual Reality or bot, we will take our system there. The future of technology is the future of Cuemath’s learning system. On the other hand, we have progressed towards a more sophisticated approach of hiring Cuemath Teachers and training and upskilling them. The best part about our product is that it is continuously evolving, which means its potential is infinite!
By March 2018, Cuemath’s aim is to establish 5,000 centers and enrol 40,000 children in the program. The funds they have raised from Capital G and Sequoia India will be utilised towards making the learning system more powerful and expanding to more cities across the country. Through its multi-format tech-enabled learning system, it ensures that children not only master math but also fall in love with it.
